Identity Key

An identity key is used both to identify the origin of captured items and to authorize the use of QRecall on a particular system. Items in an archive belong to the identity that was used to capture them.

An identity key is required to capture items. Items captured belong to the owner named by the identity key.

This is very useful when capturing multiple computer systems to a single archive; each owner forms its own hierarchy in the archive, so three different systems that all capture a volume named "Macintosh HD" don't become confused with one another.

You do not need an identity key to recall items or perform archive maintenance.

You may create an archive and send it to someone who does not have a QRecall identity key; they can download a free copy of QRecall and recall those items.
You can download and install QRecall on a new system (that does not have an identity key) and restore from a previously captured system.
You can configure a server to perform regular maintenance (merge, compact, verify) on archives without installing an identity key.

Entering an Identity Key

Enter the name of the owner (your name or the name of the system) in the Owner field. This is the name of the owner associated with the installed identity key and will appear in the archive. You can rename the owner in the future.
